Adrian Belew Brings His Quartet To Norwalk!

by John A. Wilcox

You may not immediately know the name. There is indeed that possibility. I guarantee you that you've heard Adrian Belew's guitar. Belew has a resume that includes David Bowie, Frank Zappa, Paul Simon, Nine Inch Nails, Talking Heads, Tom Tom Club, and King Crimson. His guitar growls, barks, purrs, and honks. It does whatever is needed to make a song one you will never forget. My first Belew memory was seeing him singing & playing in King Crimson on the 80s late night show Fridays. I immediately tracked down Crimson's new album - 1981's Discipline!

Before long, King Crimson led my to Belew's solo career. Early albums like The Lone Rhino and the aptly titled Twang Bar King were packed with fun songs and dizzying guitar antics. I was absolutely hooked! In 1985, Belew was 1/4 of The Bears. Smart pop songs with more than a nod to later Beatles. Numbers like Superboy, Trust, and Fear Is Never Boring are favorites to this day! As great as the solo & group studio projects were, the material rose to another level in concert. An Adrian Belew or Bears show was an event you planned your week around. The shows were adventures in sound with an "anything goes" attitude.

Subsequent years led to recording & touring with David Bowie for a 2nd time & memorable work with Nine Inch Nails. A series of 4 Sides albums, Dust, 3 Flux albums. An innovative app for musicians, and a mighty power trio delivering scorching live gigs worldwide! Here we are in 2019. Belew has a new album called Pop-Sided and is on tour with a new quartet. Opening act & multi-instrumentalist Saul Zonana and drummer Jordan Perlson join the amazing Julie Slick and Adrian Belew for a career-spanning show. Solo works, Zappa, Bears & King Crimson numbers are all there! Don't even think of missing this one!!
